Project funding

Thin Green Line assists rangers through funding cycles and targeted grants that support the operational work of rangers and provide aid to rangers and their communities in emergency situations.

We provide grants that support, empower and connect rangers. Our project grants provide operational support to rangers and community-led conservation initiatives globally. Through partnerships with like-minded organisations, we support vital frontline conservation workers, improve the rights and recognition of rangers, increase community engagement in conservation, promote Indigenous and local knowledge within land management, and support under-resourced conservation projects worldwide.

How we fund

Thin Green Line’s operations are underpinned by four strategic pillars that guide the type of projects we support. To be eligible for TGL funding, your project must first demonstrate activities in at least one of our key focus areas.

Training rangers

Saves rangers' and community lives

Projects that support the training, upskilling, and education of rangers to improve the effectiveness and safety of their work.

Equipping rangers

Improves safety and effectiveness

Projects that provide rangers with the equipment they need to conduct their role safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

Emergency ranger support

Urgent rapid response

We provide grants to the families of rangers that have died in the line of duty, as well as in other emergency situations such as environmental or social crises that directly affect rangers.

Connecting rangers

Growing the global ranger community

Projects that help to build networks among ranger groups or strengthen relationships between rangers and communities, such as community workshops, human/wildlife conflict mitigation, and junior ranger programs.

We accept expressions of interest for support year-round, and occasionally run targeted grant cycles. All new funding opportunities will be advertised on this page, and via our mailing list.

Who we fund

We work with ranger organisations, community enterprises, environmental NGOs, government agencies and national park authorities worldwide.

We rarely fund requests for individual support however we do support individuals to attend world and regional ranger congresses. These opportunities will be advertised on this page and through the International Ranger Federation and their regional representatives.

If you are an individual with an idea for your team, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to hear your ideas and may be able to connect you with organisations within our network to help bring your ideas to life.

If you wish to apply for funding please download our full guidelines and contact us.

Fallen ranger grants

Since our inception, Thin Green Line has supported the families of rangers whose lives are lost in the line of duty, and where there is little or no compensation available.

Whilst nothing could ever compensate for the death of a loved one, during the most difficult times the Fallen Ranger Fund provides families with an emergency grant, which acts as a financial lifeline that supports families through unforeseen circumstances. These grants are often used by families to mitigate the financial strain of a funeral, maintain children’s schooling, or assist a spouse to start a microbusiness that provides long-term financial stability.

If you would like to apply for support through our Fallen Ranger Fund or know of someone who could benefit from this support, please email us at [email protected].

Please try to include the following information to help us process your enquiry as efficiently as possible:

  • Your full name
  • The full name of the Fallen Ranger
  • The date of death or serious injury
  • Location of incident and the ranger’s employment details
  • Details of incident (please include cause of death if known)
  • Your relationship with this ranger (friend/colleague, employer, family member etc.)

We endeavour to support as many families as possible through this Fund. However, providing the information above does not automatically qualify you for support. Once we have received your information we will begin looking into your case – this may involve contacting our partners in the field and other relevant regional partners / authorities.

Your personal details will not be shared with third parties at any time without your permission, but information relating to the Fallen Ranger will be shared with the International Ranger Federation and recorded on the ‘Roll of Honour of Fallen Rangers’.

We are deeply grateful to you for raising an enquiry with us and will be in touch as soon as possible with further information on its progress.

Ranger training

LEAD Ranger is an innovative ‘train-the-trainer’ program that supports skills development and knowledge exchange, nurtures leadership, and embeds teaching capability within conservation organisations across Africa.

Thin Green Line Foundation is a co-founder of the LEAD Ranger training program, working hand in hand with Ranger Campus and the International Anti-Poaching Foundation to develop a benchmark training model for rangers.

Delivered in local language by a team of predominantly African trainers, LEAD provides adaptable learning resources and leadership training that enables rangers to share specialist knowledge and experience among their teams.

After completing LEAD training, rangers return to their respective organisations with improved capabilities and a newfound capacity to lead their peers in operational and training activities.

As of January 2023, we have certified 177 individuals through LEAD Ranger training. These rangers now have the capacity to train their colleagues, amounting to around 5,200 rangers across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Ghana, and Zimbabwe. This number will grow exponentially as more organisations commence training.

LEAD Ranger is currently operational in East and Southern Africa, with plans to embed training hubs throughout the continent, and further afield, in coming years. If you believe your ranger team could benefit from LEAD Ranger training, please visit the website and follow the enquiry process.
