African Rangers Unite Behind a Powerful Call to Action
Last month, Africa’s rangers came together for the 3rd African Ranger Congress (ARC), hosted by the Game Rangers Association of Africa (GRAA) at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya.
The Thin Green Line Foundation was proud to support this important event, made possible through the powerful contribution of our supporter community. Your generosity enabled over 150 delegates from 21 African countries to gather under the theme “Improving Ranger Welfare and Standards.”
Delegates came from community, state, private, and NGO sectors, including 34 female rangers and participants from under-represented nations such as Ethiopia, Central African Republic, and Madagascar. Importantly, those working in high-risk conflict zones and areas facing intense poaching pressure were present, ensuring the voices of frontline rangers were heard.

As an event by rangers, for rangers, ARC placed welfare, standards, and recognition at its heart. Key discussions focused on:
- Better working conditions and fair pay for rangers.
- Mental health and resilience in tough environments.
- Support for rangers in conflict zones.
- Recognition and celebration of ranger contributions.
- Greater inclusion of women and under-represented groups.
“When we unite and speak with one African voice, we can solve African problems with African solutions.” – Nic Funda, GRAA Chairperson
The Congress also hosted the African Conservation Awards, celebrating excellence in conservation. Several Thin Green Line partners were among the winners, recognised for their outstanding service, leadership, and commitment to protecting Africa’s natural heritage.

The Congress closed with the Lewa Call to Action, a united call for improved welfare, standardised practices, and formal recognition of rangers as essential service providers. The importance of this united call to action, cannot be understated.
The Lewa Call to Action (2025)
We, the rangers of Africa, call upon:
- Employers, governments, and partners to commit to the Ranger Welfare Pledge and implement fair standards.
- Governments to legislate and budget for ranger welfare and professionalisation.
- The global conservation community to prioritise investment in ranger wellbeing.
- Rangers worldwide to uphold the highest standards of conduct, solidarity, and service to people and nature
This short but powerful statement reminds us that each one of us can take action to make a difference.
At Thin Green Line, we proudly stand alongside Africa’s rangers through our four pillars of Support, Training, Equipment, and Connection – strengthening those who protect nature and communities across the world.
