From South Australia to the World: SARA’s Support for Rangers
Behind every protected landscape is a ranger doing the hard work on the ground. It’s not easy, and it rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. The South Australian Ranger Association (SARA) knows that many of their fellow rangers around the world are doing it even tougher – working in harsh, dangerous conditions with far fewer resources. They’re determined to help change that.
Fundraising for Thin Green Line isn’t just something SARA does – it’s part of who they are. Over the years they’ve raised more than $100,000 through creative, community-driven efforts, all to support rangers they’ve often never met, but deeply believe in. Here’s just a snippet of their amazing work.
World Ranger Congress
SARA has raised funds to support rangers from around the world – particularly their fellow rangers from Oceania – to attend World Ranger Congresses. This unique event brings together rangers from all around the world to network, share experiences, exchange knowledge, and build skills vital for conservation and community development. SARA’s support has helped strengthen global conservation networks and ensure fairer, more inclusive representation.
Girls Go Green
Female rangers across Australia and New Zealand led the charge, raising funds to support Pacific Island rangers attending global events. SARA rangers played a strong role in hitting ambitious targets and building awareness of the plight of rangers around the world.
Run for Rangers
Each year, SARA members and local community gear up to take on the rugged trails of parks and reserves in the name of supporting rangers. This year they’re collaborating with the Five Peaks Running Festival with participants taking on distances from 10km all the way up to the 58km ultra marathon, all while raising funds for Thin Green Line.
Guardians of Hope
SARA hosted a hugely successful screening of Guardians of Hope – a powerful documentary by Thin Green Line’s Ranger Ambassador for Oceania, Amanda Dudgeon. Filmed during Amanda’s year-long Walking the Thin Green Line expedition across eight Pacific nations, the film offers a rare and moving insight into the lives of the rangers on the frontlines of conservation. The event filled Adelaide’s Regal Theatre in Adelaide, with all proceeds going to the Thin Green Line’s Oceania Fund.
With these efforts – plus others like trivia nights, equipment donations, festivals, and auctions – SARA has made a real impact on Thin Green Line’s work around the world. We’re incredibly grateful for their friendship, dedication, and commitment to the cause.
