Our work
Thin Green Line is a global not-for-profit organisation that provides direct support to rangers so that they have the resources they need to protect wildlife and our natural world for the future.
Why rangers?
A thriving planet depends on every ranger having the resources they need to protect our natural world. We facilitate this vision by providing effective training, vital equipment, and emergency support to rangers and their families, and developing strong global networks for rangers and their communities.
Rangers are the frontline professionals defending our natural world. The skills and efforts of rangers are a critical defence against some of the major challenges that humanity faces. By protecting wildlife, ecosystems and habitats, and engaging in community-led action, rangers are taking immediate, practical, and tangible action against climate change, biodiversity loss, zoonotic diseases, and natural disasters. If we are to effectively protect wildlife and wild places from exploitation, we need a concerted shift in the way that rangers are viewed, respected, and engaged with.
Rangers defend our wildlife, wild places, land, water, and cultural sites, often putting their own lives at risk to do so, yet their heroic efforts often go unrecognised and unsupported. Approximately 120 rangers die each year in the line of duty, with little or no support for families after their passing. Many of these deaths result from a lack of adequate resources including equipment and training and could, therefore, be avoided through strategic investment and intervention.
Our pillars of operation
Thin Green Line provides direct support to rangers on the frontline of conservation, enabling them to protect themselves, wildlife, communities, and the future of our living planet. We do this under four main pillars of operation.
Training rangers
Saves rangers' and community lives
Projects that support the training, upskilling, and education of rangers to improve the effectiveness and safety of their work.
Equipping rangers
Improves safety and effectiveness
Projects that provide rangers with the equipment they need to conduct their role safely, efficiently, and sustainably.
Emergency ranger support
Urgent rapid response
We provide grants to the families of rangers that have died in the line of duty, as well as in other emergency situations such as environmental or social crises that directly affect rangers.
Connecting rangers
Growing the global ranger community
Projects that help to build networks among ranger groups or strengthen relationships between rangers and communities, such as community workshops, human/wildlife mitigation, and junior ranger programs.
Understand our mission
By directly supporting rangers on the frontline of conservation, Thin Green Line enables them to protect themselves, wildlife, communities, and the future of our living planet.
Our programs
My husband died in an ambush and left me with three children. Thin Green Line helped and supported me, by paying their school fees, feeding them and taking care of them
