In January 2021 The Thin Green Line Foundation (TGLF), in partnership with The International Ranger Federation (IRF), announced the Ranger Support Grants. Applications were invited from organisations to support Rangers in their work on the frontline of conservation.

The Ranger Support Grants are now closed. We will announce the reopening of grants on this page in due course. The information below can be used as a guide for future funding opportunities, but is subject to change at any time.

Grants were available for projects that directly support the work and livelihoods of Rangers. All proposals will be evaluated by a TGLF and IRF appointed committee based on funding priorities, funds available and quality and quantity of projects submitted. Proposals that support Rangers through the COVID-19 pandemic will be looked upon favourably.

TGLF Ranger Support Grants aim to fund projects in the following focus areas:

Emergency Response – Providing emergency support for Rangers affected by COVID-19. Funding will be awarded to projects that support Rangers through livelihood/salary support (full, half and quarter salary support available), expenses for medical treatment or the purchase of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, gloves and cleaning products to ensure Rangers stay safe while on patrol and in communities. Support may also be sought for medical, food and accommodation support for Rangers affected by environmental and social crises (unrelated to COVID-19).
Train – Projects that support the training, upskilling and education of Rangers.
Equip – Projects that provide Rangers with the equipment they need to conduct their role safely, efficiently and sustainably. This may include uniforms, hygiene products, tools and survey equipment. Please note PPE equipment to prevent the spread of COVID should be considered as an “Emergency Response” project.
Connect – Connecting Rangers with other Rangers to share skills, knowledge and culture; or Connecting Rangers with their local communities through, for example, environmental education programs, community workshops or alternative livelihood schemes, which foster strong relationships between Rangers and communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Funding is Available?

We welcome applications for funding requests that range from US $5,000 to $40,000.

We may consider part-funding projects that exceed this amount.

Grants made through this program are one off and cover activities/projects that are carried out over a 12-month period.

Who Can Apply

TGLF will consider proposals for funding from:

Ranger Associations that are registered with the International Ranger Federation;
Organisations that employ Rangers;
Organisations that manage volunteer Rangers;
Community conservation organisations.

Projects working in high value biodiversity areas, indigenous communities or under-resourced conservation teams will be looked upon favourably.

Please note, we will not be accepting applications from individuals at this time.

The Thin Green Line Foundation recognises that the work of Rangers is highly variable. We also understand that different job titles may apply to this type of work (e.g. Warden, Forest Guard, Eco Guard etc.). When Can You Apply

Applications open on Tuesday 19th January 2021 at 6am UTC (5pm AEDT).

The application process will be open for one month, closing on Tuesday 16th February 2021. Applications should be submitted by 5pm UTC on this date.

Please note, The Thin Green Line Foundation team are based in Melbourne, Australia where we operate on Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT). This means we might be asleep when your enquiries or applications come through! But don’t worry, once we’re awake (and you’re asleep) we will respond to any questions you may have.

We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in reduced productivity and administrative capacity for many organisations. If you are affected in this way and have a project that could benefit from this funding, but will struggle to submit an application on time please send an email to [email protected] to discuss the possibility of extending the submission deadline.

How Do I Apply and What Happens Next?

On 19th January we will open applications for submission.

Applications will be taken via an online form (available here from 19th January).

A Sample Application will soon be available for download. We advise using this to prepare your answers prior to submission to avoid losing your application in the event of network connection issues. All applications can be edited after their submission, but no later than 16th February.

After the closing date, applications will be reviewed. If we require further information about your proposal, you may be contacted by 2nd March.

Applications will then be evaluated by a TGLF and IRF appointed committee.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by 30th March.

Note: Not all projects will be funded as TGLF may not have the capacity to support all projects at this time.

Part funding may be offered for some projects.

Projects may be assessed as a potential for other funding. If your project is assessed as potential for other funding, we will keep your details on file for two years and may be in touch to discuss your needs at a later date.

All project applications will receive notification of their outcome. If unsuccessful we will endeavour to provide a short explanation on why this decision was made.
